Ba Be Lake or Ba Be National Park is located in Bac Can Province, 240km from Hanoi and covers more than 23,000 hectares boasting waterfalls, rivers, deep valleys, lakes and caves set amid towering peaks. The area is home to many ethnic minority communities. Ba Be Lake is in fact three lakes linked by wide channels, about 8km long and 400m wide. The surface is always calm, making a boat trip a peaceful experience. Reaching Ba Be has traditionally meant a six to eight hour drive over rough roads, but the newly constructed highway no3 means that it’s now possible to get here in 5 hours from Hanoi, on well paved roads, while the scenery is as magnificent as ever.
Ba Be Lake lies in the middle of the vast limestone mountain range of Ba Be National Park with large and small islands of limestone rising out of the water, many of which can be explored as you kayak around. There are also several caves to find, with beautiful rock formations that have developed over millions of years. Of those, a good example is Puong Cave, through which the Nang river runs under its magnificent limestone structures. It is 30 meters wide, and 300 meters deep with thousands of stalactite and stalagmite structures and a bat colony numbering tens of thousands. Its picturesque entrance lies to the north east of Ba Be Lake, in the hillside of the Lung Nham Range.

Dau Dang waterfall is about 3 km to the west of Ba Be Lake. It straddles the border between Bac Kan and Tuyen Quang provinces. Here the Nang River flows over a rocky section, forming a 1km long stretch of rapids and dropping several hundred metres. Water from above thunders down with dazzling white bubbles all year, creating a mighty music within the grandiose jungle. Dau Dang waterfall has many valuable species of fish, and some of them are tens of kilos in weight. In March and April, after the first rains, each school of fish races to pass the waterfall, creating the exiting spectacle known as “Fish passing dragon gate From Dau Dang waterfall”. About 300m further on tourists can get on a boat to visit the ecotourism project of Na Hang hydroelectric lake (Tuyen Quang province) and visit Bac Me in Ha Giang province. The Dau Dang waterfall is where the Nang River is broken with small rocks stacked hundreds of meters high, for more than 1 km.

Puong Cave is the most beautiful and worth seeing in Ba Be Lake. The cave is 300 meters long and 30 meters tall. High caves and boats can move in, the stalactites in the cave create a lot of interesting shapes, attracting tourists. In addition, there are many bats in the cave where tens of thousands of people live and live.
